Big Game Hunting

Hunting Hunting Enthusiast Paradise! The San Luis Valley offers 1.86 million acres of opportunities for big game hunting in the Rio Grande National Forest. Units 76, 79, 80, 81, 82, 83 are the some of the most noted hunting areas offering archery, black powder and rifle hunting seasons from August-December each year. Seasons include antelope, deer, elk & bear. Bighorn sheep and mountain goat hunts are also available here and can challenge even the most experienced outdoorsmen. Small Game Hunting

Hunting The Upper Rio Grande Area offers a large variety of small game hunting too. This is a fun family activity to help train children in gun handling, safety and encourage the enthusiasm for hunting sports. Even the most avid big game hunters enjoy the off season with small game hunting. Small game hunting includes various rabbits, fox and pine squirrels, beaver, coyote, pheasant, grouse, quail, doves, ducks, geese, turkey and more. Read the DOW small game brochure for more info.
